Beef bone broth is an easy way to not only save money on broths, but to get better nutrients from your broths that you might otherwise not get in the broth you buy at the grocery store- even if it was organic. This post has the step-by-step process of making beef bone broth, as well as insight and quick links to the recipes I make using this beef bone broth.

5 Best Things about Making Bone Broth

  1. It’s super easy! Chicken broth takes less time than beef bone broth, but once you add the ingredients together, all you need to do is check it to make sure there is enough water in the crockpot base.
  2. You don’t even need to chop, mince or separate any of the vegetables! You might need to break some carrots or celery in half if they are too long for your crockpot, but there is no chopping required!
  3. You can make the bone broth as seasoned or plain as you want. I prefer to add seasoning to my broth recipes because then it adds extra flavor to all the recipes that I need- or I can skip seasoning later. If you choose to skip seasoning in this recipe, that’s totally fine. It’s just as healthy.
  4. If you are pressed for time, you can always place the beef bone in the crockpot or stove while you’re making your recipe. It will taste just as delicious! Trust me, you can always make this recipe on the stove if you don’t have a crockpot. PLUS It cooks much more quickly. Then you can add what you need to your recipe and store the rest in your mason jars.

Benefits of Bone Broth

  1. It’s healthier- there are so many rich fats in bone broth. Bone marrow has so much to offer our bodies!
  2. No added preservatives- if there are any in the box/can of broth that you usually buy.
  3. Keto friendly! I first discovered bone broth when I started the keto diet the first time around (in 2015). It’s an excellent source of fat for your home recipes or sipping it alone.

Ingredients

  • 1-2 onions- depending on how big the onion. Slice it in half.
  • 3-4 ribs of celery, break in half if you need to.
  • 1-2 bulbs of garlic
  • Up to 3 beef bones. These are fairly affordable as they largely depend on the size, weight and the amount of bones in the package.

Instructions for Crockpot Beef Bone Broth

  • Combine all ingredients and seasoning, and vinegar
  • Fill the crockpot to the top with water- but not all the way because the crockpot will boil the water
  • Turn on HIGH for 3-5 hours
  • Turn on LOW until the fat and marrow has totally fallen out and has been cooked down
  • Once finished, clear out the side of your sink that is closest to the crockpot and follow these instructions
  • Put the large mixing bowl in the sink, and put the strainer inside the mixing bowl
  • Use the slotted spoon to scoop out the the bigger chunks and carefully remove the bones from the crockpot. Everything is extremely hot, so be very careful that the bone doesn’t fall back in. It will burn you! Place all these ingredients in the plastic bag, set it aside for next step
  • Using oven mitts, pick up the base and dump it into the pasta strainer in the sink. The strainer will catch anything you couldn’t put it the plastic bag. Lift the strainer and dump or scoop the particles in the strainer into the plastic bag. Tie up the plastic bag and put it in the trash.
  • Carefully take the mixing bowl to another counter and pour some of it into the glass measuring cup
  • Grab a mason jar and place the funnel in the mason jar
  • Place the small strainer on the rim of the funnel and pour the broth into the mason jar. The strainer will catch anything that the first strainer didn’t catch and the funnel will try to keep everything clean
  • Continue with pouring from big mixing bowl to glass measuring cup, to mason jar until you’re out of mason jars!

Notes about this Recipe

  • This can last 1-2 weeks in the fridge, or fill the mason jar most of the way and freeze it for later.
  • Check your broth periodically to ensure that nothing is burning, to check the flavor, add seasoning, or add water.
  • Recommended: make the broth near your kitchen sink- that way it’s easier to add water to your crockpot and you don’t burn yourself when you dump the crockpot.
  • While making beef bone broth is super easy, there are some tedious steps and it can be time consuming. I recommend making beef bone broth on a Friday/Saturday so that you can keep an eye on everything.
  • Empty your kitchen sink when it’s time to dump your crockpot and start pouring it into mason jars. I layer a strainer inside a large mixing bowl, then dump the everything into the strainer. I lift the strainer to dump the solids into a plastic grocery bag so that Violet doesn’t go dumpster diving
